Delhi

Akshardham

We spent some days experiencing Delhi for which Neeraj was driving us to and from anywhere we liked. We had a look at the government area with streets wide as 50meters and huge palace-like buildings for every departement - all decorated with ornaments and lots of elefants. Old Delhi - more or less being the opposite of New Delhi: the streets here are so narrow, that Neeraj doesn't drive in. We therefore experienced the busy busy streets from the comfortable seats of a bicycle riksha. Old Delhi has a Sari-Street, a Silver-Street and a Wedding-Street. Each street has only shops dedicated to the street's name. The most impressive experience for all the senses was however the chili whole sale market. Chilis in all colours and sizes were sold there, but only in 30kg bags. It was very nice to look at, however very exhausting for nose and lungs, as the smell of the chilis made you have a hard time breathing and cough...

Buying traditional indian clothes for the wedding reception of Tristan and Mary was also a good indian experience. Even though we went to the biggest Indian Mall existing, we had some trouble finding properly fitting things. Nevertheless it was much fun trying on those colourful things and in the end, we found more or less fitting clothes and the Indians were very happy with us ;-)

Delhi also included the visit of a crafts market, a very nicely built tomb of a moghul family and a ruine of a mosque from the 12th century. It was amazing to see how much dedication people in those old days had when building and decorating buildings and tombs.

Some more modern experiences we made in Delhi were e.g. very spicy McDonalds, the best and cheapest lichies on the planet, driving on the wrong side of the street and around roundabouts being a not uncommon thing and a visit in a Hindi movie: three hours long, with a "pee-break" where the actor in the movie actually pees... Additionally we experienced a "popcorn-shower" as some waiter bringing food, tripped and poured an entire popcorn box

The most special place we visited in Delhi was Akshardham, a huge temple complex built by an organisation linked to Hindu belief. The complex was only finished in 2005 and is covered with thousands of very detailed figures, carved in stone. It made us realise, that even all those temples and castles from the old times were amazing artworks, this kind of art could still be done today and even better. Unfortunately cameras are not allowed to be taken to the complex. Nevertheless, the pictures we've taken in our heads are amazing. We also attended the water and music show in the evening, which was really beautiful. However, we were not so sure whether the music and singing was praying or more campaigning for new members ...

Last but not least we have to mention the wedding reception again with some surprising elements.  In India celebrations are somewhat unusual to European minds  - dresses and other arrangements differ but what was most surprising that food concluded the event.

We guess memorable for us as well for the Indians:

it took all day to decorate the bride with Henna, to arrange jewelries and the Sari,

the warm welcome and colourful reception of colleagues and friends and

to join some really engaged dancing Indians.

    LG
    Mary und Tristan
