We managed to do hardly anything but sleep, cook, eat and walk in snowy St. Gallen during the last week of the old year. Worthwile mentioning is maybe a day filling marathon through 90% of St. Gallen's bank branches caused by unreasonable high charges of the original bank. The story finally ended with me carrying all (!) my money in cash from one to the other bank...
We also spent a very entertaining last day of the year in the capital of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Herisau. Custom is, that local men dress up as "Silvesterchläus". There is three different kinds of Chläus: the "Beautiful", the "Ugly" and the "Beautiful-Ugly". The ugly-ones look like walking trees hung with huge cow bells and we just loved them. They come in groups of five to seven and start walking from farm to farm early morning. They sing their traditional "Zäuerli" and finalise their performance with a cow bell concert. This is to wish people a good start into the new year and to make bad ghosts disappear. As we haven't met any bad ghosts so far this year, we assume it must have worked...
